“Corporations Are Not People”

Jeffrey D. Clements served as Assistant Attorney General and Chief of the Public Protection & Advocacy Bureau in the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office from early 2007 to 2009. He visited the Seattle University campus March 5th to speak about his newly published book Corporations Are Not People. Faith Stevelman, professor in the Seattle University Law School Berle Center led off the evening presentation. Her introduction was fitting because the impetus for the book was the 2010 Supreme Court decision in Citizens United v the Federal Election Commission.
The radical Citizens United decision was the culmination of a 1971 memo from future Supreme Court Justice Lewis F Powell to the U. S. Chamber of Commerce.
But this isn’t hopeless, Clements also highlighted a Montana Supreme Court decision upholding Montana’s Law banning corporate money in elections. He also provided an extensive resource list to push back on the judicial over reach of Citizens United.
